Built by the King Sengge Namgyal like a Potala Palace in Lhasa (in Chinese occupied Tibet), this nine storied building now holds a rich collection of jewellery, ornaments, ceremonial dresses and crowns. Panoramic vistas of Leh city and the nearby areas can be seen from its rooftop.

Situated just behind the Palace at a hilltop is the Namgyal Tsemo Gompa. It was founded in 1430 by King Tashi Namgyal and it houses three storied high gold statue of Maitreya Buddha, ancient manuscripts and frescoes.

2. Walk to Shanti Stupa to Treasure the Sunset

Sitting at a distance from the Tsemo Hill on a hilltop in Chanspa village is a Buddhist white domed stupa called the Shanti Stupa. It was built by the Japanese in 1991 as a part of the Peace Pagoda mission to promote world peace and to commemorate 2500 years of Buddhism. It does not reflect a Ladakhi architectural style but it is a popular tourist attraction.

4. Visiting Monasteries around Leh City

The annual Hemis festival is held here on the 9th and 10th day of the 5th month of the Tibetan calendar to celebrate the birth ceremony of Guru Padmasambhava. It has an amazing collection of age-old relics, Thangkas and silver stupas of Buddha.

Shey Monastery – Situated at 16 km from Leh city en route Hemis and Thiksey lays the Shey Palace which also houses a revered 3 storied statue of Shakyamuni Buddha in its monastery. It has a chapel that houses the largest collection of Thangkas in Ladakh.

6. Driving or Riding to Khardung La Top

Driving or riding to Khardung La top is a must thing to do on your maiden trip to Ladakh. It is a gateway to the Nubra Valley and until recently it was known as the highest motorable road pass in the world.
